{"id":945,"date":"2026-07-13T21:09:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T21:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smartmovinghome.com\/?p=945"},"modified":"2026-07-13T21:09:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T21:09:06","slug":"marco-rubio-threatens-to-teach-the-icc-the-full-meaning-of-american-resolve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smartmovinghome.com\/?p=945","title":{"rendered":"Marco Rubio Threatens to \u201cTeach\u201d the ICC the \u201cFull Meaning of American Resolve\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- begin partial\/series-card --><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><i><span>Support justice-driven, accurate and transparent news \u2014 make a <\/span><\/i><i><span>quick donation<\/span><\/i><i><span> to Truthout today!\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/smartmovinghome.com\/?p=943\">Community Activism Forced Federal Government to Abandon Plans for ICE Warehouses<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday announced what he characterized as a \u201ccampaign to dismantle\u201d the International Criminal Court, the Hague-based tribunal tasked with investigating and charging individuals with war crimes and other violations.<\/p>\n<p>In a video posted to social media, Rubio accused the international court of \u201cwaging a war against our country \u2014 not with bullets or missiles, but with statutes, compacts, and the force of so-called international law.\u201d The top American diplomat threatened that the US \u201cwill teach the ICC the full meaning of American resolve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US State Department said in a statement that Rubio\u2019s new campaign against the ICC would \u201cfeature a whole-of-government response to systematically disable\u201d the court\u2019s \u201cability to operate, target American servicemen or officials, or otherwise threaten American sovereignty.\u201d The US is not party to the Rome Statute, the 1998 treaty that established the ICC.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump and his subordinates, who have been accused of myriad violations of international law, have adopted an increasingly aggressive posture toward the ICC since taking power last January.<\/p>\n<p>In a February 6, 2025 executive order, Trump declared \u201ca national emergency to address\u201d the purported \u201cthreat\u201d posed by the ICC and announced sanctions against court officials, including its judges. The president\u2019s order cited the ICC\u2019s \u201cinvestigations concerning personnel of the United States and certain of its allies, including Israel,\u201d which is also not party to the Rome Statute.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, for alleged war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio warned in an op-ed in <em>The Wall Street Journal <\/em>on Monday that US officials accused of international crimes could be next to face ICC action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBorder Patrol agents working to remove violent criminals from our country, US Marines risking their lives to restore order in the Western Hemisphere, federal prosecutors working to dismantle terror networks plotting attacks on the American homeland \u2014 all would face the constant risk of persecution for the \u2018crime\u2019 of defending our country,\u201d Rubio wrote. \u201cUsing all the tools at our government\u2019s disposal, working beside every ally with whom we can make common cause, we will dismantle the ICC \u2014 brick by brick, if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/smartmovinghome.com\/?p=941\">Trump Says He\u2019s Taking Over Strait of Hormuz and Imposing Massive Fee<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Raed Jarrar, advocacy director of the human rights group Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), said in response to Rubio\u2019s op-ed that \u201cwhen the world\u2019s most powerful country aims to dismantle the world\u2019s only permanent international court, it sends the message that the powerful are above the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not the ICC that Rubio is dismantling brick by brick, but the rules-based international order that grew out of the ashes of World War II,\u201d said Jarrar. \u201cRubio\u2019s attack doesn\u2019t just underscore US hypocrisy, but undermines access to justice across the globe, from Ukraine to Sudan and could amount to obstruction of justice, a crime under the Rome Statute in and of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his op-ed, Rubio pointed to DAWN\u2019s call earlier this year for Iran and other Middle East nations to grant the ICC jurisdiction to investigate apparent war crimes committed during the conflict launched in late February by Trump and Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>Omar Shakir, DAWN\u2019s executive director, said Monday that Rubio mischaracterized the group\u2019s call as focusing solely on actions by US personnel.
