{"id":900,"date":"2026-07-10T15:38:37","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T15:38:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smartmovinghome.com\/?p=900"},"modified":"2026-07-10T15:38:37","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T15:38:37","slug":"mexico-filing-criminal-complaints-over-deaths-of-its-nationals-in-ice-custody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smartmovinghome.com\/?p=900","title":{"rendered":"Mexico Filing Criminal Complaints Over Deaths of Its Nationals in ICE Custody"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- begin partial\/series-card --><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><i><span>Support justice-driven, accurate and transparent news \u2014 make a <\/span><\/i><i><span>quick donation<\/span><\/i><i><span> to Truthout today!\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/smartmovinghome.com\/?p=898\">In the Wake of Supreme Court Rulings, Trump Purges Federal Election Agency<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On Thursday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans for her government to file criminal complaints against the United States, seeking to hold the country accountable for the deaths of Mexican citizens who died while in custody of immigration agencies or while being pursued in anti-immigration raids.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 17 Mexican citizens could be included in the complaint process, including 14 people who died while being detained in facilities managed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and three who died during arrests by the agency. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot turn a blind eye to \u200bthe Mexicans who have died\u2026especially to Mexicans whose only crime is working honestly \u200bin the United States,\u201d Sheinbaum said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto \u200bVelasco also spoke about the matter, stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are going to move beyond the diplomatic sphere and go directly to U.S. prosecutors to file complaints regarding these \u2060incidents, requesting \u200bthat they are investigated as criminal matters.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to criminal complaints against the U.S., Mexico will also file civil lawsuits against private companies that are helping to operate immigration jails where these deaths occurred. <\/p>\n<p>The announcements from Mexican officials come just days after a Mexican immigrant who had been living in the U.S. for decades was killed by ICE agents who were pursuing him.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/smartmovinghome.com\/?p=896\">US Targets Iran Railways as It Unleashes Deluge of Strikes for Third Day<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Houston resident Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who had lived in the city for around 35 years, was stopped by unmarked vehicles on his way to work earlier this week. As he attempted to flee the scene \u2014 perhaps because he was unaware of who was stopping him \u2014 ICE agents shot and killed him, claiming he was using his vehicle as a weapon and that their action was in self-defense.<\/p>\n<p>ICE and other agencies managed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) made similar claims of self-defense that turned out to be false following the killings of Minneapolis residents Renee Good and Alex Pretti, as well as the shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis. Immigrant rights organizations are calling for a full, transparent, and independent investigation into Salgado Araujo\u2019s killing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we know is very thin,\u201d said Juan Proa\u00f1o, the CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, adding that \u201cevery piece of evidence, body camera footage, dash cam footage, bystander video, dispatch records must all be preserved and released to an independent investigator and to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carly P\u00e9rez Fern\u00e1ndez, communications director at Detention Watch Network, said Salgado Araujo\u2019s killing was further evidence of the need to abolish ICE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cICE kills people and threatens community safety across the country,\u201d P\u00e9rez Fern\u00e1ndez said in a statement shared with <em>Truthout<\/em>. \u201cNo one is safe when ICE is present \u2014 whether on the streets or in one of the agency\u2019s more than 200 abuse-ridden detention facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>People are dying in detention and ICE agents are tearing families apart and shooting people on the streets, making people less safe, and causing chaos wherever they go.
