Abelardo de la Espriella, a far-right millionaire backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, declared victory in Colombia\u2019s presidential runoff late Sunday as preliminary results showed him leading by less than one percentage point with more than 99% of the vote tallied.<\/p>\n

Despite the narrow margin, Trump \u2014 who is notorious for lying about elections \u2014 falsely declared on Truth Social that De la Espriella won \u201cBIG\u201d as the far-right candidate\u2019s opponent, leftist Sen. Iv\u00e1n Cepeda, said the results were \u201cunofficial.\u201d Both Cepeda and incumbent Colombian President Gustavo Petro signaled that they would challenge vote counts.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an abuse to declare a president through the media when the scrutiny is still ongoing,\u201d Petro wrote on X as interim results showed De la Espriella with 49.66% of the vote to Cepeda\u2019s 48.7%.<\/p>\n

In the run up to Sunday\u2019s contest, Petro, international observers, and Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. sounded alarm about the Trump administration\u2019s interference in the race on behalf of De la Espriella, who has pledged to \u201cdisembowel the left,\u201d cut corporate taxes, and dismantle Petro\u2019s social and economic policies, which slashed poverty and boosted the country\u2019s minimum wage.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump has\u2026 implied that if Mr. De la Espriella loses, Colombia may lose the support of the United States, its most important trade and security partner,\u201d a group of U.S. lawmakers in a letter to to Trump administration officials last week. \u201cThis direct interference by U.S. officials in another country\u2019s democratic elections is inconsistent with longstanding principles of national sovereignty and non-interference, as well as international law.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on social media that he called De la Espriella late Sunday to \u201ccongratulate him on his electoral victory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trump administration looks forward to working closely with your incoming administration to advance regional security cooperation, end illegal immigration to the United States, and strengthen our economic ties,\u201d Rubio added.<\/p>\n

NPR<\/em> noted that De la Espriella \u201chas built a lucrative legal and media empire around his reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe owns a fleet of luxury cars, including a Rolls Royce, and frequently travels by private jet,\u201d the outlet added. \u201cHe has also cultivated a conspicuous public image as a businessman and influencer, launching a fashion brand, De La Espriella Style, which markets high-end accessories such as luxury watches and sneakers priced at over $1,000 a pair.\u201d<\/p>\n

De la Espriella\u2019s declaration of victory sparked protests in the streets of Colombia\u2019s capital, Bogot\u00e1. Barron<\/em>\u2019s reported that \u201croaring motorbike engines and shouts of \u2018resistance!\u2019 filled the air\u201d in the capital city as thousands took to the streets in opposition to De la Espriella.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to see many more demonstrations,\u201d one student demonstrator predicted.<\/p>\n
