It aired on the network\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d program on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>During the segment, Trump brought up the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to former President Joe Biden and has falsely described as fraudulent ever since. Trump then claimed that \u201crigged\u201d elections were \u201chappening again right now in California,\u201d referring to the state\u2019s primary elections last Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the evidence to that?\u201d Welker asked.<\/p>\n<p>A visibly upset Trump responded that there is \u201ctremendous evidence\u201d to back his statement. However, his argument relied only on the fact that it has taken several days for California to finalize the results of its races \u2014 a regular occurrence in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The delay, Trump said, meant it was \u201ca rigged election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how they count the votes in California,\u201d Welker pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>Trump rejected that idea outright. \u201cDo you know why they\u2019re doing that? Because they\u2019re cheating on the election,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Welker once again asked the president for \u201cevidence to support\u201d his claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I have to do is look,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that\u2019s not evidence,\u201d Welker interjected.<\/p>\n<p>Trump continued to berate California elections officials \u2014 and then turned his ire to Welker for daring to question his claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re crooked just like you\u2019re crooked, your press is crooked. And \u2018Meet the Press\u2019 is crooked,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not crooked. But let\u2019s continue,\u201d Welker said, attempting to shift topics.<\/p>\n<p>Trump wouldn\u2019t let up. \u201cYou play right into their hands with this stuff,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know that these elections are rigged. Your network knows that they\u2019re rigged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, Trump declared that he was done with the interview. \u201cSorry. Much of the delay has to do with how most voters in the state cast their ballots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornians rely unusually heavily on vote by mail. So we just get a greater proportion of our votes coming in by mail than in person than other states do,\u201d said Donna Crane, a political science professor at San Jose State University, speaking to a Bay Area <em>Fox <\/em>affiliate. \u201cIt\u2019s not really fair to compare us to other states in that respect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crane also explained that uneven investment of election tools and hardware among the state\u2019s several counties also contributed to the slow count.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome counties might just not buy the machines that they need because they decide not to invest that taxpayer money, but it means their results are going to come in a little late and the whole state results lag as a result of that,\u201d Crane said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s complaints about California echo his complaints from 2020. After spending much of the lead-up to Election Day that year sowing doubts about mail-in voting \u2014 which most voters ended up utilizing due to the COVID-19 pandemic \u2014 Trump falsely asserted that late-night ballot counting of mail-in votes was fraudulent. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you count the legal votes, I easily win. If you count the illegal votes, they can try to steal the election from us,\u201d Trump said in November 2020, after the race was called for Biden. <\/p>\n<p>Despite his assertions, Trump and his allies lost dozens of court challenges attempting to delay the certification of the election, oftentimes failing even to convince judges Trump himself had appointed.
