In a Fox News <\/em>interview on Sunday morning, Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, disregarded Americans\u2019 current ill feelings on the economy, instead suggesting that factors like rising prices are proof that Americans are \u201coptimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are spending more on gas, but they\u2019re also spending more on everything else,\u201d Hassett claimed in the interview. \u201cNot just groceries but restaurants. That\u2019s a sign that you would see when people are optimistic about the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hassett\u2019s view of the economy is likely distorted by the spending activities of wealthier Americans, who are not as affected by higher costs on goods as middle-class or low-income households. Indeed, many economists are describing conditions today as a \u201cK-Shaped Economy,\u201d wherein the financial situation of those with higher incomes improves while the rest of the country struggles.<\/p>\n

Hassett was also asked about credit card usage, including recent reports that show a 13 percent delinquency rate for current cardholders, the highest level seen in the past 15 years. Hassett shrugged that problem off, citing conversations with credit card companies \u2014 rather than with consumers facing difficulties.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talk to CEOs of the credit card companies all the time, and we do see some increased stress [among consumers],\u201d Hassett said. \u201cBut, for the most part, delinquency is different than default.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not any threat to the credit card companies,\u201d Hassett added.<\/p>\n

Polling demonstrates Americans don\u2019t see eye-to-eye with Hassett\u2019s rosy views.<\/p>\n

According to a Gallup survey published on Tuesday, just 16 percent of Americans say they are \u201cfulfilled\u201d financially right now, meaning their finances \u201csupport the life they want to have.\u201d Conversely, 32 percent of Americans define themselves as financially \u201cstressed,\u201d meaning they are \u201cstraining to meet obligations, needing to make trade-offs between financial and life goals, and feeling they lack control over their financial situation.\u201d <\/p>\n

, 4 in 10 Americans (42 percent) rate the economy as being \u201cpoor,\u201d while only 2 in 10 (20 percent) say it\u2019s in \u201cexcellent\u201d or \u201cgood\u201d condition. Another 3 in 10 Americans (34 percent) say the economy is only in a \u201cfair\u201d state.<\/p>\n

On top of those numbers, only 15 percent say the economy is \u201cgetting better,\u201d while another 20 percent say it\u2019s \u201cabout the same\u201d as it was before the current period. Nearly 6 in 10 Americans, 59 percent, said things are \u201cgetting worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The federal government\u2019s own numbers contradict Hassett\u2019s optimism, confirming what Americans are feeling \u2014 that prices are increasing at a troubling rate. For example, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for April, released early last month, showed that prices on all goods increased, year-over-year, by 3.8 percent, outpacing increases in average wage gains for workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is hurting Americans. There is a real financial squeeze underway,\u201d and it\u2019s a \u201csetback for middle-class and lower-income households,\u201d said Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, in response to the report.<\/p>\n

Hours after the April CPI report\u2019s publication, Trump was asked by reporters whether increases in prices influenced his negotiation tactics for the war in Iran. Trump\u2019s answer suggested he was uninterested in how Americans viewed the economy under his watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot even a little bit\u2026I don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n
