Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) claimed this past weekend that Republicans will end up winning the 2026 midterms due in large part to God\u2019s intervention.<\/p>\n

Johnson appeared on the far right program \u201cThis Week on Capitol Hill,\u201d which is hosted by Family Research Council president Tony Perkins. During the July 25 episode, Johnson claimed that Americans \u201ctrust House Republicans\u2026to run this government,\u201d and cited that belief as why Republicans will maintain control of Congress beyond November. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re gonna win the midterms,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cI\u2019m very bullish about the outcome. We talk about it all the time, and with each passing day, I\u2019m more confident.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perkins responded by saying that Republicans \u201cexceed the expectations of the pundits\u201d who \u201cstill don\u2019t understand the power of prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s right!\u201d Johnson exclaimed.<\/p>\n

The House Speaker then recounted a story where he recently spoke to reporters, telling them \u201cthis is a God thing\u201d regarding how well Republicans will do in the elections this year. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have intercessory prayers\u201d \u2014 groups of people who organize to pray in person for a particular cause \u2014 \u201cwho are on the grounds at the Capitol praying each of these things through,\u201d Johnson said of Republican-sponsored legislation.<\/p>\n

Johnson\u2019s comments are a nod to his broader Christian nationalist vision of how the U.S. government should be run. <\/p>\n

Just months after Johnson became Speaker, a Congressional Freethought Caucus (CFC) report published in January 2024 highlighted his Christian nationalist views, noting that the lawmaker has \u201cspent decades working to deny, reject, and undermine the constitutional separation of church and state, including trafficking in fake histories about our nation\u2019s founding.\u201d<\/p>\n

The CFC, which is composed of around 35 lawmakers whose aim is to protect the separation between church and state, cited many of Johnson\u2019s statements and actions over the years, including:<\/p>\n
