Hundreds of people demonstrated in Madison, Wisconsin, on Wednesday night following the police killing of a Black man in a popular commercial and residential area.<\/p>\n

The Madison Police Department (MPD) has not yet identified the man, stating only that he was in his 30s. Local social justice organizations have identified the man who was killed as Madison resident Corey Ruiz.<\/p>\n

The killing occurred early in the afternoon on Williamson Street in the near-east side of the city. According to police, officers were responding to calls about a man who had allegedly stolen bicycles and was \u201cchecking\u201d vehicle doors in the neighborhood. After finding a man on a bicycle, police pursued him, eventually resulting in the man either falling off his bike or being knocked off the bike by police.<\/p>\n

At least four police officers tackled Ruiz. MPD alleges that Ruiz \u201cpulled out a fix-blade knife and injured an officer\u201d during the struggle. It\u2019s unclear from witness video if or when this occurred.<\/p>\n

At one point in the video, an MPD officer shouts, \u201che\u2019s got a knife,\u201d after which a taser is used. MPD claims that the taser failed.<\/p>\n

The officers eventually tackled Ruiz to the ground. Video shows one of the officers kicking Ruiz and placing his knee on Ruiz\u2019s lower back. Shortly after, another officer who was involved in the struggle stands up and shoots Ruiz from above three times. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was basically point blank, three shots to the head, upper-chest area,\u201d said Madison resident Michael Doubek, who witnessed the killing and recorded it on his smartphone. Doubek added that he didn\u2019t see a knife until after Ruiz was shot.<\/p>\n

Other witnesses yelled at the officers afterward. \u201cI saw everything! You did not need to kill him!\u201d one woman shouted. <\/p>\n
