For decades, Ramsey Zeid\u2019s parents have passed down stories about their home village of Bayt Nabala \u2014 and its destruction when the State of Israel was created in 1948.<\/p>\n

And for just as long, the Palestinian couple, who now live in the Canadian province of Manitoba, had to counter attempts to brush away their experiences during the Nakba \u2014 the forcible displacement of about 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland enacted by Zionist paramilitaries and the Israeli military.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike any Nakba survivor, they still have their keys, they still have their deeds, they still have their stories. They remember it like [it was] yesterday,\u201d Zeid told Truthout<\/em> in an interview.<\/p>\n

So, when his parents \u2014 now aged 83 and 81, respectively \u2014 saw stories from the Nakba (Arabic for \u201ccatastrophe\u201d) on display at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights last month, they were left speechless.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they saw the photos on the panels, it just brought back so many memories that they teared up,\u201d Zeid said. \u201cAll their lives they\u2019ve been told, \u2018No, the Nakba never happened<\/em>.\u2019 This was almost validation for them. Like, \u2018We\u2019re not crazy. This did happen, and what I\u2019ve been telling people wasn\u2019t a lie.<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present <\/em>exhibit opened in late June at the federally funded museum in Winnipeg, in central Canada.<\/p>\n

The result of four years of work, it features artwork, artifacts, and personal testimonies about the Nakba, and explores the ongoing struggle for Palestinian rights. It will run until 2028.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a long overdue exhibit,\u201d said Zeid, president of the Canadian Palestinian Association of Manitoba and a member of the Nakba exhibit\u2019s advisory committee.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted this exhibit in the museum so that people could learn about [the Nakba]. This is something that happened, and we can\u2019t change our past; we can learn from it, and we can change our future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Backlash Against the Exhibit<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The exhibit comes amid a global push to amplify Palestinian voices during Israel\u2019s war on the Gaza Strip, which a United Nations commission has described as a genocide.<\/p>\n

And while the collection in Winnipeg is limited in size and scope \u2014 it measures 12 meters and contains two text panels \u2014 observers say its inclusion at a federal museum devoted to human rights is a \u201ctremendous achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a very rare case of a prominent institution listening to the Palestinian Canadian community \u2026 and putting on a project that meets some of their concerns,\u201d said Michael Bueckert, vice president at Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, an advocacy group.<\/p>\n

According to Bueckert, the museum\u2019s \u201cuplifting [of] Palestinian perspectives\u201d is also partly why the collection has drawn the ire of pro-Israel lobby groups, media outlets, and individuals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Canadian Museum for Human Rights has failed its mandate,\u201d read the headline of an opinion column published last month in The Globe and Mail<\/em> newspaper.<\/p>\n

Co-written by former Justice Minister Irwin Cotler, one of Canada\u2019s most prominent defenders of Israel, the piece accused the museum of presenting \u201ca deeply contested political narrative as settled historical truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

The influential pro-Israel group the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs also hit out at the exhibit, describing it as part of\u201ca dangerous, one-sided political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs and B\u2019nai Brith Canada \u2014 another leading pro-Israel organization in the country \u2014 have said the exhibit \u201crisks inflaming hatred\u201d against Jewish people while calling for the museum\u2019s CEO to be held \u201caccountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

A \u201cFake Controversy\u201d<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

That heated response should come as no surprise, said Bueckert, describing it as a \u201cfake controversy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pro-Israel groups have spent years lobbying against the Nakba\u2019s inclusion in the human rights museum, he explained. They also have sought to control how Israel\u2019s founding is perceived in Canada \u2014 something they had largely succeeded in doing, until now.<\/p>\n

For decades, Israel and its supporters have presented the country\u2019s creation in 1948 as the successful culmination of a Zionist effort to give \u201ca land without a people\u201d to \u201ca people without a land.\u201d<\/p>\n

But historians have documented how the country was built on the remnants of hundreds of destroyed and depopulated Palestinian communities. They have also shown how early Zionist leaders and armed militia groups carried out a coordinated campaign of ethnic cleansing in an attempt to rid the land of its non-Jewish inhabitants.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes before and during Israel\u2019s founding, fleeing to neighboring areas, including Lebanon, Jordan, the West Bank, and Gaza.<\/p>\n

Denying the Nakba or blaming Palestinians for their own expulsion in 1948 is a form of , which is defined as racism that \u201csilences, excludes, erases, stereotypes, defames, or dehumanizes Palestinians or their narratives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bueckert told Truthout<\/em> in an interview that \u201cthe fact that Israel was created through ethnic cleansing\u201d \u2014 and that Palestinian dispossession remains unresolved to this day \u2014 cuts to the heart of Israel\u2019s founding myths.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe very fact of Palestinians being given a place to tell their stories of what happened to them in 1947 and \u201948, that itself is seen as a threat to these [pro-Israel] organizations,\u201d Bueckert said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been just decades and decades of pro-Israel groups having so much authority over the national conversation and the expectation that they can simply crush these types of initiatives,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis [exhibit] is a very powerful example of an institution doing important, credible work and standing by it, and the lobby not getting its way. That\u2019s really what\u2019s happening here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s Minister of Identity and Culture Weighs In<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Criticism of the Nakba exhibit escalated in late June as Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Marc Miller weighed in on the exhibit.<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Canadian Press<\/em>, Miller, who oversees the Department of Canadian Heritage, said the exhibit contained \u201cregrettable\u201d wording and errors that should be addressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot identifying Hamas as a terrorist organization is, I think, a failure,\u201d he told the news agency. \u201cAnd not clearly stating that, for example, Hamas intended to kill Jews [on October 7, 2023] is, I think, an unfortunate error in curation and should be rectified.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt isn\u2019t up to me to speak to, or insert myself in, the curation of any particular exhibit. But manifestly, you cannot deny the fact that this is an exhibit that is born in controversy \u2014 and perhaps some of it could have been avoided.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs \u2014 the pro-Israel lobby group \u2014 took credit for Miller\u2019s remarks, saying its pressure campaign had \u201cproduced results\u201d after more than 11,000 people urged the government \u201cto hold the leadership of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller\u2019s office did not directly respond to Truthout<\/em>\u2019s questions about whether his comments amount to political interference in the museum\u2019s operations, as some critics have alleged.<\/p>\n

\u201cPalestinian displacement and refugee experiences are an important conversation that deserve a place in public education and discourse, including museums,\u201d Miller\u2019s press secretary said in a one-paragraph statement sent to Truthout<\/em> by email.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not the role of the federal government to dictate programming at Canada\u2019s national museums. Questions related to the operation of the Museum, including any of its exhibits, should be directed to the Chief Executive Officer or the Board of Trustees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upholding Human Rights \u201cfor All of Us\u201d<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Isha Khan, CEO of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, said the museum \u201cwelcome[s] any input on the exhibit and that\u2019s how we treated the minister\u2019s comments.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with Truthout<\/em>, Khan said the museum has a process in place to assess any feedback it receives on its exhibits, \u201cwhich can lead to changes.\u201d But she said the institution is only in the early stages of compiling reactions to the Nakba exhibit.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a public institution, it\u2019s been very important to us to always be accountable to the public and to be prepared to change any exhibit if we need to because the framing\u2019s not right or there\u2019s something that we missed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I can also tell you that we absolutely stand behind our curatorial process. It took four years to develop this exhibit and so though we have this process \u2014 and we will use it in a way our museum should \u2014 it will not immediately result in a change tomorrow because someone didn\u2019t like something in the exhibit.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Nakba exhibit \u201cfalls squarely within our mandate, and it has the support of our Board of Trustees,\u201d Khan also told Truthout<\/em>.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging that the exhibit has drawn criticism, she noted that the museum has received thousands of emails from people across Canada and in other countries expressing their support.<\/p>\n

In the days after the installation opened in June, visitation also was up by around 60 to 70 percent, compared to what it would normally be at that time of the year, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that building an understanding of the personal stories and experiences of Palestinian Canadians is squarely within our mandate as a national museum and as the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, that the stories of Palestinian Canadians belong here, and that we can learn from these stories of forced displacement,\u201d Khan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the focus that I hope people take away from what this little exhibit in this museum in Canada is doing,\u201d she added. \u201cWe are trying to foster understanding about human rights, what they mean, and why we have to uphold them for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
